The fifth annual SPEA Connect Week will be held on the Indiana University Bloomington campus from June 18 to June 23, 2017.
This year, we are pleased to announce that we will be working with the Link Observatory Space Science Institute (SSI) for our SPEA Connect Week course. The observatory that is now a part of SSI was built in 1936, and was operated by Indiana University beginning in 1948. The observatory’s research use ceased in the mid-1980’s due to higher levels of light pollution. During its active life, it was responsible for 90% of all asteroid discoveries in the United States.
In 2015, SSI was established as a nonprofit organization to operate and maintain the observatory for the university. In partnership with NASA, they created a Discover Space Classroom program, with structured 30-minute modules and videos narrated by NASA scientists, and a Discover Space Live program, which brings NASA astronauts and mission control specialist into the classroom in real-time.
