Take these steps to apply

  • Step 1: Apply to IU Graduate School

    Select SPEA Connect Online MPA or SPEA Connect Online Graduate Certificates as the Academic Program.

    • Upload your personal statement to the online application or send to as a PDF attachment.
      • Consider the following prompt: Describe your most important accomplishments and how they have prepared you for graduate study at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Outline carefully your current goals and professional plans. Explain your reason for selecting the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

      • While there is no word limit, this statement is usually two pages or about 500 words.

    • Upload your resume or CV to the online application or send to as a PDF attachment.
    • On the online application, provide contact information for three recommenders. After you submit the application, an email notice will prompt your designated recommenders to upload their letters. Alternatively, recommenders may submit recommendations to as a PDF attachment. Recommendation letters are not required for graduate certificate programs. 
      • When possible, recommendation letters should come from former professors. Recommendations from individuals who have had a direct supervisory or instructional relationship the student will also be accepted. In cases of self-employment, a colleague could also be asked to provide a reference. Recommendations from friends and relations will not be accepted. In all cases, your references should come from individuals who can objectively evaluate your preparation for graduate school.
  • Step 2: Complete the Departmental Questions
  • Step 3: Submit official transcripts

    SPEA requires transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions attended (except Indiana University), regardless of if a degree was conferred.Submit one copy of official transcripts from the undergraduate and graduate institutions from which your degree was conferred. Unofficial transcripts from which credit was transferred to a degree-conferring institution will suffice.

  • Step 4: Send your GRE or GMAT scores
    • GRE scores should be sent electronically through ETS to Indiana University, institution code 1324. A department code is not necessary.
    • GMAT scores should be sent electronically through GMAC to Indiana University-Bloomington, School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Masters in Public Affairs.
    • GRE/GMAT scores are not required for graduate certificate programs.

  • Step 5: Pay the online application fee
    • $55 for domestic students
    • $65 for international students
  • Step 6: TOEFL or IELTS
